The lawns at College Farm are covered in snowdrops at this time of year and are an affectionate reminder of my late father who planted so many snowdrops when my parents returned to College Farm 50 years ago. Often considered the first flower to bloom after winter, the snowdrop is a symbol of hope, new beginnings, and the promise of warmer days to come.

The history of the Snowdrop flower can be traced back to ancient times. The Greeks and Romans believed that the snowdrop had medicinal properties and could cure illnesses. The flower was also associated with the goddess Persephone, who was the queen of the underworld. According to Greek mythology, the snowdrops were said to have bloomed from the tears of Persephone when she was released from the underworld.

In addition to its cultural significance, the Snowdrop flower also has ecological importance as it is one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring, providing an important source of nectar for early pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Let's celebrate the snowdrop!
